Known today as the “Republic of Croatia”, the history of this southeastern European nation reaches far back into antiquity. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I, when it became part of Yugoslavia. Croatia broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991, joining NATO in 2009 and the European Union in 2013.

The background of the Adriatic’s deep azure contrasts with the lush green landscape of pine trees and olive groves, stretching into white-stone shorelines of small pebbles or huge rocks.  Against this stunning backdrop the “Land of a Thousand Islands” offers so much to travellers from near and far: walled cities dating back to the days of Ancient Greece, palaces, Roman ruins, medieval churches, museums, cathedrals – so much to see and do in a land steeped in history.

From nearly 6,000km of spectacular coastline surrounded by glittering waters, we have chosen the area around the northern coast of the country, in Kvarner Bay, as our base for our next Croatian adventure.  In the summer of 2022 we will base three sailing yachts at Mitan Marina in the resort coastal town of Novi Vinodolski. The nearest international airport to Novi Vinodolski is Rijeka International Airport on the island of Krk (pronounced "kirk").

Please note that for year 2022 our fleet in Croatia will consist of two Classic Cruising Class yachts and one TradeWinds 50 Cruising Class yacht.

Sail Croatia

Croatia has been one of our most popular European summer cruising areas for several years, and many Members and guests have given us fantastic reviews from this unique sailors’ wonderland.

However, for year 2021 going forward we searched for a more off-the-beaten-track cruising ground - and we have discovered “the Kvarner Riviera”. We’re so excited to share this well-kept Croatian secret with you, so read on …

A favorite vacation destination of European aristocracy since the 19th century, the Kvarner Riviera offers fashionable coastal resorts, gorgeous white-sand beaches, fantastic snorkeling and diving and easy access to some stunningly beautiful islands, many of which are only accessible by boat.

From our base at Mitan Marina we’ll sail off on a voyage of discovery, meandering around tiny uninhabited paradises to the larger inhabited islands of Krk, Lošinj and Rab. This sailing area is steeped in history, having been inhabited by nomadic tribes for thousands of years before being taken over by the Ancient Romans. Step back in time as we explore Byzantine churches, ancient watch-towers and crumbling monasteries.

We’ll marvel at the dramatic sun-baked landscapes, hike through enchanting ancient pine forests and linger in lush, fragrant gardens.  We’ll discover picturesque fishing villages built from traditional stone and explore perfectly preserved medieval walled-towns. Secluded coves and beaches nestle into the rocky coastlines of these islands, offering superb swimming, snorkeling and diving, as well as plenty of regular sun-bathing.

For one of the smaller islands, Lošinj island has a HUGE story to tell! An absolute must -see during our island adventure is the Museum of Apoxyomenos at the Kvarner Palace here. The sole exhibit is a beautiful 2,000 year-old classical Greek sculpture of a young athlete, which was discovered on the seabed off Lošinj in 1997. The bronze statue was returned home in 2016 following restoration and touring some of the most important museums around the world (Louvre, British Museum, J.P Getty Museum).

The Kvarner area is well-known for it’s sumptuous seafood and local wine - the best known being žlahtina which is produced from local grapes grown only in Vrbnik on Krk. Krk also has the only vineyard in the world which produces “sea champagne”, matured for 5 years on the seabed at a depth of over 90 feet! Kvarner scampi are celebrated worldwide. More like langoustine than shrimp, they are traditionally served here in a delicious tomato and wine sauce. For those with a sweeter tooth … try Rabska torte. Originally made by the nuns of Rab island as a gift for the Pope in the 11th century, the exact recipe of this delicious, citrusy pastry is still a closely guarded secret.

There's so much to see and do on the islands of Kvarner Bay, and far fewer tourists (as yet) than there are in the better-known vacation destinations.  Dobrodošli na naše otoke - we can't wait to welcome you aboard!
