Sophisticated and cosmopolitan, the French island of Martinique is the perfect combination of stunning beaches, breathtaking natural beauty, and diverse landscapes. Martinique is located north of St Lucia and northwest of Barbados, nestled in the heart of the Lesser Antilles.

As one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean, this charming island paradise is home to picturesque sheltered bays, calm turquoise waters, and miles of golden, white and black sand beaches. One of the most beautiful beaches, Grand Anse des Salines, is home to fine, white sand, tranquil waters and natural rock pools - the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Set sail for attractive and secluded deserted beaches accessible only by yacht. Discover and explore incredible scuba and snorkel sites that include the steep ledges of Diamond Rock and the Saint-Pierre Shipwrecks that offer a fantastic array of marine life.

Mount Pelée, the highest point of the island, provides an exciting hiking route for those feeling active, and offers incredible panoramic views across Martinique. The capital, Fort-de-France showcases colonial architecture, botanical gardens and colorful streets filled with boutiques, bars, and restaurants. Sample a taste of French Creole cuisine and the famous Columbo de Martinique – a curry dish that is inspired by French, East and West Indian spices. Or try a glass of Ti Punch, made from locally produced Rhum Agricole, sugarcane and lime juice as you watch the sun as it sets over the horizon.

Sail Martinique

Martinique was originally inhabited by the peace-loving Arawak people, who named their home “Madinina” (the Isle of Flowers) for good reason;  exotic wild-flowers of every colour and shape fill the air with their fragrance – from the mountain tops in the far north to the sleepy bays and coves around the tranquil southern shores.

We’ll sail around this enchanted ‘island of flowers’, enjoying all the charms it has to offer. We’ll laze on the legendary palm-lined beaches of St Anne; we’ll marvel at the breathtaking beauty of the tiny sand-spit named “Loup Garou” (or ‘werewolf)’ and we’ll explore the many little coves, islets and charming fishing villages along the rugged windward coast.

We’ll take a hike to the fascinating ruins of an old sugar plantation house/Chateau, and visit the historic Caravelle Lighthouse where it’s worth the climb for a stunning 360-degree panoramic viewpoint of the entire peninsula and Martinique’s wild Atlantic coast.

We’ll visit the pretty town of St Pierre, completely rebuilt after the 1902 eruption of nearby volcano Mount Pelée and marvel at the power of Mother Nature in the small commemorative museum,

Weather conditions permitting, scuba divers should have the opportunity to dive several superb underwater wrecks, some of them the result of the Mount Pelée eruption. There may also be a chance to dive at Le Diamant (Diamond Rock)  - considered to be one of the most beautiful dive sites in Martinique. This immense volcanic rock towers over 574ft high and stands about 3 miles from the coast.

Snorkelers won’t be disappointed either, as many areas of Martinique draw visitors from around the world thanks to sea turtles, stingrays, and an otherwise vibrant marine life including playful dolphins who can be seen all year round.  There’s even an opportunity to see the famous ‘Manman Dlo’ -  one of the most special art pieces of the West Indies. Designed by the Martinican artist, Laurent Valere.and set up in 2004, this is a monumental underwater sculpture representing a mermaid (“manman dlo” in Creole). It’s a fitting tribute to the sea, and an invitation to its protection.
