Welcome to the Spice Islands of the Caribbean!

The Caribbean country of Grenada consists of the island of Grenada itself plus six smaller islands, which lie to the north of the main island. It is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, northeast of Venezuela and southwest of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines The first people believed to have settled in Grenada were the Arawak-speaking Amerindians from South America.

Christopher Columbus cruised past here in 1498, and (although he never landed) he named the island “Concepción”. Spanish sailors later renamed it “Granada” after the city in the hills of their homeland and this was adapted to “Grenade” by French colonists. The final transformation of the name to “Grenada” was completed by the British when they regained control of the islands in 1763.

Many years on, the islands still reveal influences of Amerindian customs and of French and English settlement - fused with African, East Indian and Caribbean ancestry.

These are among the most diverse and varied Caribbean islands, with fabulous beaches, turquoise seas, characterful restaurants, atmospheric beach bars – and so much more.

The islands boast stunning scenery – rainforest, waterfalls, lakes and dramatic beaches, pristine reefs, stunningly crystal-clear waters; and everywhere you go you’ll be surrounded by the glorious aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger.

This is a paradise for all activities water-related - swimming; snorkeling; scuba diving ... and of course sailing.

Despite all of this Grenada's islands remain real Caribbean islands – with something for everyone to enjoy.

Sail Southern Grenadines and Grenada

Much of our fleet will be in the Southern Caribbean again for the months of September and October this year, and we’re thrilled to take the opportunity to offer our Members some very special cruises. We're going to repeat last year's very successful adventures to our relatively new Caribbean cruising ground in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations – we’ll sail south again to “the spice islands” of Grenada and her delightful little sister island, Carriacou. What's even more exciting is that this summer a change to our itinerary will mean that we spend even more time in Grenada and Carriacou compared to our 2019 cruises!

We’ll swim and snorkel on the deserted beaches of uninhabited tiny islands, as well as visiting some of the larger, better known beaches in the southern Caribbean.

We'll keep a look out for the area's spectacular marine life, particularly dolphins and sea turtles, as well as a huge variety of tropical fish.

We’ll take a step back in time to discover why Grenada’s islands have been known for hundreds of years as “the spice islands”, and learn first-hand how nutmegs are still processed as they always have been here – with no machinery at all involved.

Later, our senses will be overwhelmed in one of the most famous spice markets of the West Indies, surrounded by huge mounds of heady aromatic spices, herbs and exotic fruits and vegetables.

Scuba divers and snorkelers will have a totally unique opportunity to visit one of National Geographic’s “25 Wonders of the World.” - the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, which lies within a Marine Protected Area only 10 minutes from St George’s. This is an ideal destination for lovers of culture, art, and nature, and not to be missed on any visit to Grenada.

A warm welcome to Grenada - the fabulous spice islands of the Caribbean.
